Theme and Variations

Educational concerts for Lyceum students.

Through musical examples ranging from the tune of “Happy Birthday” to Ludwig van Beethoven’s third symphony, we’ll be showing students ways in which composers modify and/or vary an initial musical idea (theme). Examples will also be given from works by the other two classical greats, Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

And, just to prepare ourselves for this concert, let’s make an imaginary visit to our kitchen. Picture, if you will, a large tray full of plain muffins, and what happens if we add to one a touch of jam, to another a touch of chocolate, to another some candy sprinkles and so forth. The variations are unlimited, even though all are still muffins!
