Writing in the World

The world we live in is so often punctuated by terrible events that picking up the newspaper may sometimes feel like an exercise in despair. How do we respond to mass violence, war, environmental disaster, and other events that do not involve us personally but still affect us deeply?

In this three-hour workshop we will explore ways of moving from shocked wordlessness or despair to language.

Please bring a news report of an incident, current or past, that has affected you.

LISA SUHAIR MAJAJ has published poetry, creative non-fiction, and other writing widely in venues across the US, Europe and the Middle East. Her poetry volume GEOGRAPHIES OF LIGHT won the 2008 Del Sol Press Poetry Prize. Her writing has also been used in a variety of non-literary venues, from public (e.g. her poems will be part of the exhibit AFTERMATH: THE FALLOUT OF WAR— AMERICA AND THE MIDDLE EAST at the Harn Musuem of Art, University of Florida, August-December 2016) to private (an enthusiastic reader once tattooed a line from one of her poems on her arm).
