Iphigenia in Aulis (by Euripides) - Faneromeni 17 Arts Festival

An interactive performance, specially designed for Faneromeni 17 Arts Festival, unfolds at the old city’s unique amphitheatre. Euripides’ classic “Iphigenia in Aulis”, hosted at the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation, traces out a rotten political system in this antiwar production that dares calls into question the morality of power.

As the Greek fleet is becalmed at the port, the decision is taken to ritually slaughter an innocent girl. The army chiefs must choose: only if the slaughter takes place will the campaign set out; otherwise, nothing happens. The play presents the protagonists of Oresteia and the Iliad just before the Trojan War, on the threshold of legend.

Inspired by the show’s distinct features, contributors will work with a group of volunteers from the audience who will participate in specific moments of the show as a chorus of citizens, encouraging the public to engage with the play. With them, accompanied by live music, a six-member chorus narrates the tragic story of Iphigenia, mostly the conditions that led to her sacrifice. What is really staked in this tragedy is not the unjust slaughter of an innocent girl but the corruption of those in power.
