Kition Planetarium and Observatory - October 2017

There is always something interesting for all ages at the Planetarium: events, the Observatory, guided tours at the geology and fossils exhibitions and much more.
In every evening with clear skies, the stars appear one after another. The wonders of the night sky inspire people and offer them enjoyment and relaxation.
From time to time a dream to know all names of the stars and planets and to locate them easily comes.
The KITION PLANETARIUM & OBSERVATORY every month issues program for public, both Planetarium programs and observations (usually optical, the radiotelescope is opened for public by appointments). There is a natural history exposition with minerals, fossils and aliens (meteorites) that is opened by appointments.

This October is a special month, autumn is coming upon us and we eagerly await UN World Space Week.  This year we are celebrating the 60th anniversary of the birth of space research.  KITION PLANETARIUM & OBSERVATORY is proud to be the National Coordinator of World Space Week for Cyprus since 2009 and we are happy to announce that 8 events are taking place nationwide this year. The theme is “Exploring New Worlds in Space” and we will be connecting with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory on Monday 9th October.

On Saturday 14th October, we will be presenting our experience of the Great American Total Solar Eclipse which took place in America in August 21st and we will discuss our expeditions in Oregon and Tennessee.  We will also deliver the results of our research and update you on our continuing collaboration and friendship with NASA scientists.  KITON PLANETARIUM & OBSERVATORY was ground-breaking in Cyprus since it organised this expedition, and researched this outstanding astronomical phenomenon in two different locations. We also presented our research in Solar Eclipses at a scientific meeting in the USA.

The end of this month you will find us at Finikoudes beach in Larnaca, participating in the International Observe the Moon Night InOMN 2017.  All over the globe, people observe our stunning natural satellite, which has inspired writers, poets, artists, musicians, lovers and even scientists for millennia. Join us and the world in this huge international event.  Observe the Moon with our powerful telescopes and enjoy its features in detail. During this event on Saturday 28th October we will be fundraising for Cyprus Alzheimer's Association. The event is under the auspices of the Mayor of Larnaca.

Our course for beginners “READ THE SKY” starts on Friday 6th of October, this course consists of 4 sessions held once a week.  It introduces the wonders and working of our sky and the Universe. Participants gain useful knowledge and skills to further their enthusiasm for astronomy. They also receive a certificate once they complete the course.

Finally, I would like to remind you about the KITION ASTRONOMY ACADEMY which begins in October for children of ages 8-12.  The meetings take place every Friday 17:00 to 19:00.  Each lesson includes knowledge on subjects such as the Solar system, stars and black holes, the Milky Way and the Big Bang. It also teaches the children practical skills about what can be observed in the sky and how to find the constellations and stars. Children participate in hands on activities and learn how to use astronomical instruments such as telescopes. Please call to register.
