In this context, the 5th Xarkis Festival focuses on the idea of “sympraxis” *the rejuvenation of traditional crafts and revival of interest in younger generations, in order to pass them down in meaningful ways, and preserve them in the years to come.
*Sympraxis: Common action to achieve a certain goal, participation in a joint effort, co-operation.

Koilani village
Lemesos District, Cyprus

Located in the Lemesos (Limassol) district, the charming village of Koilani sits at an altitude of 820 metres on the Troodos mountain range, in the ‘Krassohoria’ area, just 35 km from Lemesos town. The village can be reached by following the B8 route, and then the F606 route, or by following the E601 route, and then the F606 route.+

This year, on the occasion of five years of community actions, Xarkis festival will have a free entrance, and donations will be welcome. Come, bring your friends and join us in this one of a kind experience.

Five years ago, what is now known as Xarkis Festival was merely a concept for a social experiment, an occasion for an intergenerational get together, and an impulse to react creatively against a more general crisis that began then to afflict the island.
Today, having undergone a process of maturity, Xarkis Festival returns to its original form: a two-day cultural and interactive event will be realized with experiential workshops, music, open air cinema, audio walks, installations of space and an experimental ziafettin as the climax of the Festival.
With a more cohesive and comprehensive structure, this year Xarkis Festival is implemented with collaborators who, like every year, have been selected mainly on the basis of their contribution to social and creative groups / communities. This Festival exists because of a need to search for a form of social sustainability, through collaborating with local stakeholders, deepening the dialogue with folk culture, intangible and tangible heritage, combined with aspects of contemporary culture.
The community of Xarkis, friends and collaborators of the Festival, know that our organization has been working on the parallel initiatives called, “Craft Stories” and “Voicing Stories”, which bridge together aspects of socially engaged design, collecting, recording and narrating oral stories.
In light of these initiatives and through an open call, a number of proposals have been assimilated in this year’s Festival program and share the aim of collecting stories, and interpreting them through various forms of expressions in the fields of interest of the participants.
